OC Sends Emergency Firefighting Funds to Tuanan Orangutan Research Station

The Tuanan Orangutan Research Station located in the Mawas conservation area in Central Kalimantan, Indonesia has requested emergency firefighting funds.

Fires are engulfing the surrounding area south of the study area in Tuanan, which is also a heavily trafficked area by the resident orangutans. There are currently over 3,000 active fire alerts in the Central Kalimantan province, according to Global Forest Watch Fires. Additionally 64% of those fire alerts are on carbon-rich peatlands in Central Kalimantan. This is especially concerning since peatlands typically acquire their storage of carbon dioxide over thousands of years, and the immediate loss of these habitats can release massive amounts of the gas over just a few months.

We still need your help…

The Orangutan Conservancy was able to help the Tuanan Orangutan Research Station today, but we still need your help to keep enough firefighting funds available for the rest of the dry season. In just the Sebangau National Forest, over 6,000 wild orangutans are being threatened by the infernos, help us fund more emergencies like this one today!
