Today, May 31st 2021, is World Parrot Day where we aim to bring attention to the threats that both wild and captive parrots face.
In Indonesia, there are over 85 species of parrot. Of that 85, 14 species are protected by law due to the threat of extinction. The area that is richest with parrots is the Wallace line, which covers the islands of Sulawesi, Nusa, Tenggara, and Maluku.
One of the primary threats to wild parrots in Indonesia is captured or poached from their habitat. These parrots are often smuggled out of Indonesia via sea routes. These captured parrots have a very high death rate (of nearly 40%) due to long transportation without food or water, poor poaching methods, and poor handling.
